Candidate Overview

New Jersey candidate for governor Mikie Sherrill has represented New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District since 2017, following a career as a US Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor. Sherrill has built her campaign for governor around “the Affordability Agenda,” which focuses on promoting middle-class affordability. Here’s how she stands on the key Garden State Growth policy pillars:

Mikie Sherrill’s Platform

Affordability

The Sherrill campaign brands the Mikie Sherrill for Governor platform “The Affordability Agenda” and argues that her policies will improve affordability across New Jersey.

Housing

Sherrill’s campaign website touts her commitment to housing affordability through new home construction, by encouraging municipalities to build “Missing Middle” housing, and by state financing for repurposing commercial and other underutilized buildings into housing units.

Environment

Sherrill points to her record in Congress on the environment, including leadership in passing the Great American Outdoors Act to protect New Jersey’s open spaces. She vows to protect our NJ’s communities and ecosystems, build climate-resilient infrastructure, and reduce our carbon emissions while also driving down energy costs and utility bills, as well as to invest in solar energy and incentivize brownfields redevelopment.

Child Care

Sherrill points to her record in Congress of expanding child tax credits. As governor, Sherrill promises to expand New Jersey’s child tax credits and work with businesses to encourage voluntary employee childcare.

Tax Relief

Sherrill promises to reduce government employee health care costs through independent auditing of the State Employee Benefits Program. She also supports combining municipal services to reduce local tax burdens.

Reproductive Rights

Sherrill supports a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights and promises to expand contraception and IVF access.

Transportation

Touting her achievements in Congress, Sherrill commits to investing in transportation infrastructure, especially the Northeast Corridor. She calls for NJ Transit to have better service, invest more in upgrades, and communicate more effectively with customers. She supports the Turnpike widening and opposes New York’s congestion pricing policy.
