New Jersey candidate for governor Sean Spiller was the Mayor of Montclair, New Jersey from 2020-2024, and is the president of the New Jersey Education Association. Sean Spiller is running on a broadly progressive platform focused on education, the economy, housing, health care, child care, climate change, democracy and labor, LGBTQ rights, and gun violence prevention. Here’s how he stands on the key Garden State Growth policy pillars:

Education
Spiller promises to build on current NJEA policies as governor in order to improve New Jersey K-12 education.
Affordability and the Economy
Spiller calls for public policy to address economic cost drivers, particularly housing, health care, child care, education, and climate change. Spiller calls for the state government to partner with municipalities to construct affordable housing, establish state-wide rent control, limit corporate home buying, and invest in foreclosure and eviction prevention programs.
Child Care
Spiller proposes continued investment in universal pre-K, including increased investment in facilities and transportation, expanded child care tax credits, and expedited child care license processing to promote more child care facilities.
Health Care
Spiller’s platform calls for pricing and cost transparency in health care, independent price boards to set health care prices, price caps on prescription drugs, medical debt protections, and increased community health clinics.
Climate Change and Clean Energy
Spiller calls for investment in green energy through public/private partnerships, expanded electric vehicle investment and infrastructure, investment in higher education to increase green jobs, and continued investment in infrastructure and electrification. Spiller has taken out billboards promising to fight congestion pricing.
Democracy and Labor
Spiller promises to protect the rights of unions, expand voting rights with same-day voting registration, and promote collective bargaining.
Reproductive Rights and LGBTQ+ Rights
Spiller vows to protect reproductive healthcare and LGBTQ+ youth rights, with a focus on protecting transgender youth, marriage equality, and freedom from employment discrimination.
Gun Violence Protection
Spiller supports “commonsense gun violence prevention measures.”
